Entropy here is length × log₂(pool size), the standard formula for a password drawn uniformly at random. The pool is assembled by adding a block for each character class the tool detects: 26 for lowercase, 26 for uppercase, 10 for digits, 33 for symbols, 1 for a space, and 100 for any non-ASCII Unicode character. The crack table then takes half the search space, 2^bits ÷ 2, and divides it by each attacker's guess rate.

Length moves the result far more than variety does, because it multiplies while an extra class only nudges a logarithm. The six attacker rows run from 10² guesses per second for a throttled online login up to 10¹⁴ for a nation-state ASIC, with the offline single-GPU row at 10¹⁰ — that middle figure is the realistic threat once a password database leaks. Ratings step from Very weak below 28 bits through Strong at 60 and Excellent at 80.

The uniform-randomness assumption is the big caveat. The formula cannot tell that a predictable string is guessed in seconds while a same-length random one is not, so anything a human chose scores far higher here than it deserves against a dictionary-and-rules attack. Passphrases are mismeasured the other way, since their real entropy comes from words selected rather than letters typed. Nothing leaves the page — the whole calculation runs in your browser.

FAQ

How many bits of entropy make a strong password?

This tool labels anything under 28 bits very weak, 36 to 60 fair, 60 to 80 strong and 80 to 128 excellent. For anything that might be cracked offline, 80 bits is the sensible floor; 60 is only adequate where guessing is genuinely rate-limited.

Why does the phrase loaded by default score over 130 bits?

Because the formula only sees 28 characters drawn from a 27-symbol pool of lowercase plus space. Its real strength is the four dictionary words chosen, closer to 44 bits. Any well-known phrase collapses further against an attacker running a wordlist.

Is adding a symbol better than adding two more characters?

Two characters usually wins. Length multiplies the per-character entropy, while a new class only enlarges the pool inside a logarithm — a symbol lifts the pool from 62 to 95, worth roughly 0.6 extra bits per character you already have.

How many guesses per second can a real attacker manage?

It depends entirely on the hash. The offline single-GPU row at 10¹⁰ per second is realistic for a fast hash such as MD5 or NTLM, while a properly configured bcrypt or Argon2 hash drops that rate by six orders of magnitude or more.

Is my password sent anywhere when I type it in?

No. The calculation runs in your browser as you type, and nothing is transmitted or stored. The field is masked by default with a Show button to reveal it. Even so, avoid pasting in a password you are currently using.
