Fragrance oil weight is typically calculated as a percentage of the wax weight — not the total poured volume — and is added on top of that wax weight.

6–10% is a common safe starting range for soy wax, but the right load can vary by wax type, wick, and the specific fragrance oil.

Every fragrance oil has its own IFRA (International Fragrance Association) maximum usage rate, which can be well below 12% for some scents. Always check the fragrance oil supplier's IFRA certificate or datasheet for the specific oil you're using — exceeding it isn't just a performance issue, it can be a safety issue for certain fragrance compounds.

The tool converts vessel volume into wax weight by density: wax grams equals volume in millilitres times density in g/mL. In Cylinder (diameter × height) mode it computes pi times radius squared times height from your millimetre figures after subtracting the headspace, so the default 70 mm by 90 mm vessel with 12 mm headspace works out to about 300 mL and 270 g of soy wax. Fragrance oil is then taken as a percentage of that wax weight, not of the volume.

Wax type sets the density: Soy and Paraffin are both 0.90 g/mL, Coconut-Soy Blend 0.88, Beeswax 0.96 and Gel Wax 0.87. That spread is narrow, so vessel geometry and headspace move your result far more than the wax you pick. Fragrance load defaults to 8 percent; the results table flags anything above 10 percent as needing a check, and a second note appears above 12 percent pointing you at your oil's IFRA maximum usage rate.

The volume maths assumes a straight-sided cylinder, so tapered, curved or embossed jars will read high — fill yours with water and use Direct volume entry instead. Fragrance oil is added on top of a wax weight that already fills the vessel, so the poured total slightly exceeds the space available. Densities are room-temperature figures and molten wax is less dense, which is why you weigh the melt rather than judging it by eye.

How much wax do I need for a 70 mm by 90 mm jar?

With 12 mm of headspace the fill volume is about 300 mL, which at soy's 0.90 g/mL is roughly 270 g of wax per candle. Change the headspace and the answer moves proportionally, because only the filled height enters the calculation.

Is fragrance load a percentage of the wax or of the finished candle?

Of the wax weight, which is the standard supplier convention. The tool takes your percentage of the computed wax figure and reports it as an additional amount to add. An 8 percent load on 270 g of wax comes to 21.6 g of oil.

What fragrance percentage is safe for soy wax?

The field defaults to 8 percent and the results table flags anything over 10 as needing verification. Above 12 a second warning appears. The real ceiling is the IFRA maximum on your specific oil's datasheet, which for some scents sits well below 12 percent.

My vessel is tapered — will cylinder mode still work?

It will overestimate, because the geometry assumes straight sides. Switch the Vessel shape select to Direct volume entry, fill your jar with water up to your intended pour line, measure that water in millilitres, and type the figure in instead.

Does the wax type change the answer much?

Barely. The five options span 0.87 to 0.96 g/mL, so beeswax needs about ten percent more grams than gel wax for the same jar. Soy and paraffin are both listed at 0.90 g/mL and return identical numbers to each other.
