Come funziona il calcolo

Il filamento è un cilindro. Volume per metro = π × (d/2)² × 100 cm. Moltiplica per la densità (g/cm³) per ottenere i grammi per metro. Dividi il peso per i grammi-per-metro per ottenere la lunghezza, oppure moltiplica la lunghezza per questo valore per ottenere il peso.

Il PLA da 1.75 mm ≈ 2.98 g/m, quindi una bobina tipica da 1 kg contiene circa 335 m. Il PLA da 2.85 mm ≈ 7.91 g/m — circa 126 m per kg.

Come funziona il calcolo

Filament is treated as a perfect cylinder, so the tool computes volume per metre as pi times the radius squared times 100 cm, then multiplies by the material density to get grams per metre. At 1.75 mm with PLA at 1.24 g/cm³ that is about 2.98 g/m; at 2.85 mm it is about 7.91 g/m. From there it converts in whichever direction you asked for, and cost is simply weight in kilograms multiplied by your price per kg.

Density and diameter are the two things that move the answer, and diameter matters more because it is squared. The material dropdown ranges from ABS at 1.04 g/cm³ up to CF-PLA at 1.30, with PLA 1.24 as the default. The Calculate dropdown picks the direction: length to weight, weight to length, or spool weighing. That last mode subtracts your empty spool weight (default 200 g) from the total on the scale (default 1100 g) to give what is left.

The maths assumes filament is exactly at its nominal diameter and perfectly round, which real filament is not — a spool held to plus or minus 0.03 mm carries a few percent of error, and because the radius is squared that error roughly doubles in the result. Densities are generic per material type, not per brand, and pigment-heavy or filled filaments drift from them. Nothing here accounts for purge towers, priming lines or failed prints, and cost is always shown with a dollar sign.

Per metre, yes — about 2.65 times as much, because cross-sectional area scales with the square of the diameter. For the same printed part the weight is identical; you simply feed far fewer metres of the thicker filament through the extruder.

What density should I use for PETG or ABS?

The dropdown already carries them: PETG at 1.27 g/cm³ and ABS at 1.04. Also listed are PLA+ 1.25, TPU 95A 1.21, ASA 1.07, Nylon 1.15, Polycarbonate 1.20, wood-fill PLA 1.28 and CF-PLA 1.30. Pick the closest match to your spool.

Why does this not match my slicer's filament estimate?

Slicers report the filament they will actually extrude, including skirts, prime lines, purge blocks and tool-change waste. This calculator converts a clean length or weight using geometry only, so expect the slicer figure to run slightly higher on multi-material or heavily purged prints.
