Tire diameter is calculated from the size code: (section width in mm × aspect ratio ÷ 100 × 2 ÷ 25.4) + rim diameter in inches. That converts the sidewall height (doubled, for top and bottom) from millimeters to inches and adds it to the wheel diameter.

Your speedometer reads based on the ORIGINAL tire's rotations per mile, not the new tire's. Fit a larger-diameter tire and it covers more ground per revolution, so the speedometer under-reads actual speed — you're going faster than it shows. Fit a smaller tire and it over-reads.

Regearing — installing a numerically higher (lower gear) axle ratio scaled to the tire diameter change — restores the engine RPM at any given road speed back to what it was before the tire swap. That, in turn, restores the accuracy of factory-calibrated systems tied to that RPM-to-speed relationship, such as shift points and cruise control behavior.

Tire diameter in inches is (section width mm × aspect ÷ 100 × 2 ÷ 25.4) + rim diameter, so the stock 265/70R17 measures 31.61 in and a 285/75R17 measures 33.83 in, 7.03% taller. The recommended axle ratio scales with exactly that: current ratio × (new diameter ÷ old diameter), or 3.73 × 33.83 ÷ 31.61 = 3.99:1. Engine speed uses the standard RPM = (MPH × axle ratio × transmission ratio × 336) ÷ tire diameter, where 336 is 63,360 inches per mile ÷ 60 ÷ π.

Leave Transmission gear ratio at 1.0 to compare in a direct top gear, or enter your overdrive ratio, 0.70 for example, to see cruise RPM in that gear instead. Target speed decides where the three RPM rows are evaluated, 65 mph by default. Everything else follows from the two tire sizes, and the diameter change percentage is reported directly as speedometer error: positive means the new tire is taller and the speedometer under-reads, so you are travelling faster than the needle shows.

The recommended ratio is a raw number, not a part you can order. Ring-and-pinion sets come in fixed steps, so 3.99 in practice means shopping for 4.10 and accepting slightly higher RPM than the calculation promises. Diameters come from the nominal size code and assume an unloaded tire, where under load the rolling radius is smaller and real RPM higher. Speedometer error is taken as exactly the diameter change, ignoring factory calibration offset, and on many modern vehicles the real fix is an ECU recalibration.

What gear ratio do I need after fitting bigger tires?

Multiply your current axle ratio by new diameter ÷ old diameter. Going from 265/70R17 at 31.61 in to 285/75R17 at 33.83 in on 3.73 gears gives 3.99, so you would shop for the nearest ratio actually sold, typically 4.10.

How far off will my speedometer be with taller tires?

By the same percentage as the diameter change, which is 7.03% on the default sizes. A taller tire makes the speedometer under-read, so an indicated 65 mph is really about 70 mph. A smaller tire makes it over-read instead.

What RPM will I turn at 65 mph after a tire change?

The defaults show 2,577 RPM before, then 2,408 RPM on the taller tire with the stock 3.73 gears, and 2,577 again once regeared to 3.99. Restoring that original RPM at speed is the entire point of the recommended ratio.

Where does the 336 in the RPM formula come from?

It is 63,360 inches per mile divided by 60 minutes and by π, which turns miles per hour plus a tire diameter in inches into wheel revolutions per minute. Multiplying by the axle and transmission ratios then converts wheel speed into engine speed.

What should I enter for transmission gear ratio?

Leave it at 1.0 to compare in a direct 1:1 top gear. If you cruise in an overdrive gear, enter that ratio, 0.70 for instance, and all three RPM rows are recalculated for that gear at your target speed.
