Mileage Deduction & Reimbursement Calculator

Calculate a business mileage deduction or reimbursement using editable US IRS standard mileage rates or UK HMRC Approved Mileage Allowance rates, including the UK 10,000-mile tier.

Editable — verify the current IRS standard mileage rate at irs.gov before filing. This default may not reflect the latest year.

These are general-information defaults, not tax advice. The US standard mileage rates and the UK HMRC Approved Mileage Allowance Payment rates are reviewed periodically — the IRS announces new business/medical/charitable rates each December for the following year, and HMRC AMAP rates, while historically stable for long stretches, can also change.

Always verify the exact current-year rate at irs.gov (US) or gov.uk (UK) before filing a return or submitting an expense claim — the values here are editable so you can drop in the confirmed figure.

Pick a scheme and the tool applies that country's per-mile rate to your logged distance. Under US (IRS standard mileage rate) it is a flat miles × rate, with the Purpose dropdown filling the rate field: 0.70 for business, 0.21 for medical and moving, 0.14 for charitable. Under UK (HMRC Approved Mileage Allowance) car mileage is tiered at 45p for the first 10,000 miles and 25p above that, while motorcycles use a flat 24p and bicycles 20p.

Miles driven and the scheme choice drive everything else. Every rate field is editable, which matters because the defaults age: selecting a Purpose or Vehicle type refills the rate, but you can type over it with the confirmed current-year figure. For UK car journeys both tier rates are separate inputs, so if only the first-10,000 band changes you can update that alone. The tiered breakdown row appears once you cross 10,000 miles.

The output is a deduction or reimbursement amount, not tax saved; what you actually get back depends on your marginal rate. The tool has no calendar, so the UK 10,000-mile tier only resets if you run each tax year as a separate calculation. It does not cover the US actual-expense method, parking, tolls or commuting exclusions, and the built-in note tells you to confirm rates at irs.gov or gov.uk before filing.

How much is 1,000 business miles worth?

At the default US business rate of 0.70 per mile, 1,000 miles produces a 700.00 deduction. Under the UK car scheme the same distance at 45p comes to £450.00, because the whole 1,000 miles sits inside the first-10,000-mile tier.

How does the UK 10,000-mile threshold work?

The first 10,000 business miles in the tax year are claimed at 45p and every mile after that at 25p. Enter 12,000 and the tool computes 10,000 at 45p plus 2,000 at 25p, totalling £5,000.00, and shows the split in the rate row.

Can I claim medical or charitable driving in the US?

The Purpose dropdown offers Medical / Moving at 0.21 per mile and Charitable at 0.14, both far below the business rate. Eligibility rules differ sharply from business mileage, so confirm that you qualify before claiming either category on a return.

What rate applies to a motorcycle or a bicycle in the UK?

Set the scheme to UK and the Vehicle type dropdown to Motorcycle for a flat 24p per mile, or Bicycle for 20p. Neither has a 10,000-mile tier, so the rate stays constant for every mile and the tiered inputs are hidden entirely.

Do these rates already cover fuel and insurance?

The standard rates are designed to cover running costs as a whole, including fuel, servicing, insurance and depreciation, which is why you cannot also claim those items separately under this method. Parking and tolls are handled separately and are not included in this calculator.
