The 0.25 lb/bird/day figure for standard layers is a widely-used rule of thumb (roughly 1/4 lb per adult hen per day) — actual consumption varies by breed size, activity level, and temperature.

Birds eat more in cold weather to maintain body heat, and free-ranging or foraged food can offset (but not replace) purchased feed. Treat this as a planning estimate and adjust the feed-rate field based on your own flock's actual consumption once you have a few weeks of data.

The arithmetic is deliberately plain: daily feed equals birds times feed rate per bird per day; total equals daily times days; bags equals the total divided by bag size and rounded up; cost equals bags times price per bag. Everything is in pounds and US dollars. Selecting a Bird type writes its rate straight into the editable feed-rate field — Bantam 0.125 lb, Standard Layer 0.25 lb, Meat Bird / Broiler 0.4 lb, each per bird per day.

Feed rate is the number worth getting right, because it scales every other output linearly. Start from the 0.25 lb standard-layer default, then overwrite the field once you have a few weeks of your own consumption data. Bag size and price control the money side: presets cover 25 lb, 40 lb and 50 lb bags plus a Custom option that leaves the field free. The projected yearly rows always assume 365 days at today's rate and price.

Bags are rounded up with a ceiling, so the total cost is what you actually spend at the store rather than the value of feed eaten — six layers for 30 days need 45 lb but bill you for two 40 lb bags. There is no seasonal term even though birds eat more in cold weather, no credit for free-ranging or kitchen scraps, and no metric or alternative-currency mode anywhere in the tool.

How much feed does one chicken eat per day?

The presets use 0.125 lb for a bantam, 0.25 lb for a standard layer and 0.4 lb for a meat bird or broiler, per bird per day. Choosing a bird type writes that number into the feed-rate field, where you are free to overwrite it.

How many bags of feed do six hens need for a month?

Six standard layers at 0.25 lb come to 1.5 lb a day, or 45 lb across 30 days. Against a 40 lb bag that rounds up to two bags, because the calculator always buys whole bags rather than a fraction of one.

What does the projected yearly cost actually include?

It takes your current daily feed figure, multiplies by 365, rounds up to whole bags and multiplies by your bag price. It assumes a constant flock size, a constant feed rate and today's price for the entire year, so it drifts as any of those change.

Does free-ranging reduce how much feed I need to buy?

Usually yes, but the calculator has no term for it. Foraged food offsets purchased feed rather than replacing it, so the practical approach is to track what your flock really eats for a few weeks and lower the feed-rate field accordingly.

Can I enter kilograms or a currency other than dollars?

No. Bag sizes, feed rates and every total are in pounds, and the price fields are labelled in dollars. If you work in metric, convert your rate to pounds first; the cost maths is unit-blind, so you can read the currency as your own.
