1.5-3% of body weight per day in forage is the standard range cited by equine nutritionists. Most healthy horses at maintenance do fine around 2%.

Easy keepers and overweight horses may need to stay near the 1.5% end — but even when restricting calories, avoid under-feeding forage itself, since horses need near-constant access to forage for gut health (long gaps increase the risk of ulcers and colic).

Hard keepers, growing horses, and pregnant or lactating mares often need closer to 2.5-3%. Note this covers hay/forage only — not grain or concentrate, which many working horses also receive on top of their hay ration.

Daily hay is a straight percentage of body weight: hay per horse equals body weight in pounds times the percentage divided by 100. The slider runs from 1.5 to 3.0 percent in 0.1 steps and starts at 2.0, so the default 1000 lb horse comes out at 20 lb a day. That is multiplied by the number of horses and by the days of supply, divided by bale weight, rounded up to whole bales, then multiplied by price per bale.

The percentage slider is effectively the whole model, and the help text beneath it is the guidance: stay near 1.5 percent for easy keepers and overweight horses, and move toward 2.5 to 3 percent for hard keepers, pregnant or lactating mares, and horses in heavy work. Bale weight matters just as much for the bale count and cost — the two preset buttons load 50 lb for a small square and 1000 lb for a large round.

Kilogram entry is converted straight to pounds and every output is pounds and dollars. The percentage is applied on an as-fed basis with no correction for hay moisture, and it covers forage only — grain, concentrate and pasture grazing are neither added nor deducted. Rounding up to whole bales also means a single large round bale can appear to cover a long period on paper while spoiling in the paddock well before it is eaten.

What percentage should I use for an easy keeper?

Stay near the 1.5 percent end of the slider. The help text warns against dropping below it even when restricting calories, because horses need near-constant forage access and long empty-stomach gaps raise the risk of ulcers and colic.

How many small square bales will one horse get through?

Divide total pounds by bale weight and round up. A 1000 lb horse at 2 percent over 30 days eats 600 lb, which is 12 bales at the 50 lb small-square preset or a single bale at the 1000 lb large-round preset.

Does this figure include grain and pasture?

No. The percentage covers hay and forage only. Grain, concentrate and any grazing are neither added nor subtracted, so a horse on good pasture will eat less hay than shown here while one on a dry lot may well eat more.

Should I adjust for how dry the hay is?

The calculation treats your percentage as as-fed pounds and applies no moisture correction. Hay is typically 85 to 90 percent dry matter, so 2 percent as fed lands slightly under 2 percent on a dry-matter basis if you are following a nutritionist's numbers.
