Total cost = filament + electricity + machine amortisation + labour + post-processing, with the whole stack scaled up by the failure rate (so successful prints absorb the cost of failed ones).

Etsy / eBay price = cost × (1 + margin). For pricing competitively, look at finished listings on those marketplaces — these numbers are your floor, not your ceiling.

The estimator builds a cost stack from four measured lines and then applies two adjustments. Filament is weight in grams divided by 1000, times your price per kilogram. Electricity is wattage divided by 1000, times print hours, times your kWh rate. Machine wear is printer cost divided by expected lifetime hours, times print hours. Post-processing is minutes divided by 60, times your labour rate. Those four are summed, divided by one minus the failure rate, then multiplied by one plus your margin.

The failure rate and margin decide the final price more than anything else. Failure defaults to 8%, which divides the subtotal by 0.92 so that successful sales absorb the cost of scrapped prints. Expected lifetime defaults to 5000 hours against a $500 printer, giving 10 cents an hour of machine wear. Note that your labour rate only applies to the post-processing minutes field — the hours the printer runs unattended are deliberately not billed as your time.

The number is a floor, not a market price. It excludes marketplace and payment processing fees, listing costs, shipping, packaging and the design time that went into the model, all of which matter on Etsy or eBay. The currency dropdown changes the symbol only; there is no exchange rate conversion. And the margin field behaves as a markup on cost rather than a margin on the sale price, so a 40% entry leaves you about 28.6% of the sale price as profit.

How much does it cost in electricity to run a 3D printer?

Wattage divided by 1000, times hours, times your kWh rate. At the defaults — 120 W for 8.5 hours at $0.16 per kWh — that is about 16 cents for the whole print. Electricity is almost always the smallest line in the stack.

What failure rate should I use for 3D print pricing?

The default is 8%. A well-tuned printer running proven files in PLA sits lower; tall, thin or warping-prone geometry in ABS or a printer you are still dialling in sits higher. The subtotal is divided by one minus this figure, so 20% adds a quarter to your cost.

Does the recommended price include Etsy fees?

No. Marketplace listing fees, transaction and payment processing percentages, shipping and packaging are all outside the calculation. Work out those charges for your platform and add them on top before you set the listing price.

Why is my labour rate not applied to the print hours?

Because unattended machine time is not your working time — it is covered by the machine wear line instead. The labour rate is applied only to the post-processing minutes you enter, which defaults to 20 minutes for support removal, sanding and packing.

What lifetime hours should I put for machine amortisation?

The 5000-hour default spreads a $500 printer over roughly seven months of continuous running, at 10 cents per hour. Lower it if you expect to replace hot ends, belts and boards frequently, or raise it for a machine you intend to run for years.
