Alcohol mass stays constant when you dilute: V₁ × ABV₁ = V₂ × ABV₂. So target volume V₂ = V₁ × ABV₁ ÷ ABV₂, and water to add = V₂ − V₁.

This approximation ignores contraction — alcohol and water mix to slightly less than the sum of volumes (about 2–4% at high ABVs). For drinking spirits this matters by 0.2–0.5% ABV; use a hydrometer for exact bottling strength.

حساب کیسے کام کرتا ہے

Both modes rest on the same conservation identity, V₁ × ABV₁ = V₂ × ABV₂. In "Solve water to add for target ABV" the tool computes final volume as V₁ × ABV₁ ÷ ABV₂ and reports the difference as water to add, so 700 ml at 60 percent down to 46 percent needs 213 ml. In "Solve final ABV after adding water" it runs the other direction, giving ABV₂ = ABV₁ × V₁ ÷ (V₁ plus what you added).

Current ABV and Target ABV do most of the work. The volume unit selector accepts ml, cl, l or oz, and every output is returned in whichever unit you chose for the current volume, so a litre entry produces litre answers. Targets must sit below the current strength; ask for a higher one and the result reads "Target must be lower" rather than a negative volume. The reference table lists typical pairs, such as cask strength at 55–65 percent down to 40–46.

This is pure volume bookkeeping and it ignores the contraction that occurs when ethanol and water mix, which runs a few percent at high strengths and shifts real bottling ABV by a few tenths of a point. It also assumes whatever you add contains no alcohol and no dissolved sugar, so juice, syrup or vermouth will not behave exactly as modelled. For anything you intend to label, confirm with a hydrometer at a known temperature.

اکثر پوچھے گئے سوالات

How much water do I add to bring cask strength whisky to 46 percent?

For a 700 ml bottle at 60 percent, 213 ml. The tool solves final volume as 700 times 60 divided by 46, which is 913 ml, then reports the difference. Add it gradually and taste as you go rather than dumping it all in.

What ABV do I end up with if I add a fixed amount of water?

Switch the mode select to solve final ABV after adding water, then enter the amount in millilitres or ounces. Adding 200 ml to 700 ml of a 60 percent spirit gives 46.67 percent, which the tool reports to two decimal places.

Why does it say target must be lower?

Because adding water only ever reduces strength. If your target ABV equals or exceeds the current ABV the tool refuses instead of returning a negative volume. Raising strength would mean adding higher-proof spirit, which this calculator does not handle.

Is the answer exact enough for bottling?

Close, but not exact. Ethanol and water contract when mixed, which the volume identity used here ignores, and that typically shifts true ABV by a few tenths of a percent. For anything carrying a label, confirm with a hydrometer at a known temperature.

Can I use juice or syrup instead of plain water?

The maths holds for any alcohol-free addition, so juice behaves like water as far as the ABV figure goes. What it will not capture is the sugar and solids you are adding, which change density and will throw off a hydrometer reading afterwards.
